Hosted VoIP – Frequently Asked Questions
VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a technology that allows you to make and receive phone calls and faxes over the Internet instead of through the telephone network.
What is Hosted VoIP?
Hosted VoIP or Managed VoIP is a service where a third-party provider hosts and manages all the telecommunications equipment and software at the VoIP Providers location.
Companies that use a Hosted VoIP Service get the benefit of the VoIP Providers facilities and technical expertise without the costs and risks associated with managing those facilities. A managed VoIP-service package typically includes the design, integration and deployment of IP-telephony equipment and software, along with management and maintenance of existing telephony solutions and the new VoIP network.

AVAD’s Hosted VoIP Phone System offers a great deal of flexibility for managing your businesses telecommunications. Not with AVAD, all changes to your system are included in your base monthly charge.
What Does It Cost?
All of our Business VoIP Calling Plans offer unlimited calling in the US and Canada with the exception of our Virtual Call Center Solution.
Is a T-1 Connection Required?
Not always. The bandwidth connection required is based on the number of phone users in each location. We highly recommend using a specialized VoIP router to ensure the highest call quality.
Who Provides Internet Connection?
The bandwidth required depends on the number of phone users at each office location.
For an office with 10 people, we recommend a high speed Internet connection from the local cable company. We work with the high speed provider to make sure you get the most appropriate Internet connection that is within your budget.
Is There a Minimum # Of Phone Users?
Yes. AVAD has a 5-user minimum.
Is There a Maximum # of Phones I Can Have?
Theoretically no, the maximum number of phone users at any given location is governed by the available bandwidth.
Can I Keep My Existing Phone Numbers?
YES, in virtually every case, even if you are moving to a different area code or even a different state.Read about Porting (transferring) your existing telephone numbers to your new VoIP Phone Service.
Can Each Employee Have a Direct Dial Number
Yes, this is up to you. You can assign a direct dial number to any employee or to just certain employees.
Can I Make Calls and Use the Internet?
Yes. VoIP phone calls share the Internet connection with other computers that are on the network. For full quality control we recommend using a router with Quality of Service capabilities such as Edgewater routers. This will configure voice traffic to have priority over data for consistent high call quality. When not on the phone, the entire bandwidth is available for data access!
Will I be Using a Computer Headset?
No. IP Voice replaces your traditional PBX system. You still use telephones to make calls. However, AVAD supports the ability to use a headset and soft phone on your computer.
Can I Use a a Traditional Fax Machine?
Yes. We support traditional fax machines. A fax adaptor is required.
What Phones Can Be Used By Home Based Users?
Home based employees use the same phones as those based in your offices. We recommend either Polycom or Cisco IP phones.
