IDG News Service - Cybercriminals have found a new launching pad for their scams: the phone systems of small and medium-sized businesses across the U.S.
In recent weeks, they have hacked into dozens of Open-Source Premise Based VoIP telephone systems across the country, using them as a way to contact unsuspecting bank customers and trick them into divulging their bank account numbers and passwords.
Attacks on Premises based open source VoIP systems built on the Asterisk have been targets of attacks for the past year.
Fugitive VoIP Hacker Extradited to the US

A Venezuelan citizen arrested in Mexico last February on hacking and wire fraud charges has been extradited and is expected to appear in court tomorrow in New Jersey, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman, announced.
Edwin Pena, 26, is scheduled to appear tomorrow at 2 p.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Claire C. Cecchi for an initial appearance. A 20-count Indictment charges Pena with conspiracy to secretly hack into the computer networks of unsuspecting Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phone service providers; conspiracy to commit wire fraud by transmitting telephone calls over the victim''s networks; and individual hacking and wire fraud counts.

U.S. seeks extradition of man on the run for more than 2 years

Just days after his apprehension in Mexico following two years on the run from law enforcement authorities, an alleged hacker was indicted this week by a federal grand jury for hacking into the computer networks of voice-over-IP service providers.
Edwin Pena had been arrested in June 2006 on computer and wire fraud charges. The U.S. government charged that Pena and a cohort hacked into the computer networks from November 2004 to May 2006. Pena then resold the VoIP services to his own customers.
